About The Lab
Canterbury Acoustic Testing Services has established a new purpose-built Acoustic Testing Facility in Christchurch, New Zealand, designed to provide accessible and reliable services to the Australasian and international acoustics community.
The facility offers a valuable resource for product testing, verification, and research and development. For many years, access to acoustic testing facilities in Australasia has been limited, with several sites closing in recent times. To address this gap, planning for a new reverberation room began in October 2018, with the design finalised in early 2019. Construction commenced in late March and was completed by the end of July 2019, followed by acoustic commissioning in August.
The reverberation chamber is a cuboid structure built in accordance with AS ISO 354:2006, specifically subsections 6.1.1 (Volume of reverberation room) and 6.1.2 (Shape of reverberation room). It measures 7.7 m × 6.1 m × 4.7 m, with a volume of 219 m³ and an internal surface area of 224 m².
The wider facility comprises the reverberation room, an adjoining control room, transmission loss openings, a Ceiling Flanking Noise (CFN) testing facility, and a rain noise rig, enabling a broad range of acoustic testing capabilities.
